When Steve picked him up at home, Herbert seemed nervous. Steve ignored his state of mind till they actually arrived at school. Though he'd expected it to be empty, Steve could not help noticing how spooky the place looked when nobody was around.

"Mellow out, Herbert," he advised. "It's not a crime to be at school on a Saturday afternoon." The truth was that Steve was not entirely without fear. He watched out for his own best interests, but he was not by nature dishonest. If what he was doing hadn't been so important, he might have left the legacy key unused at the bottom of his underwear drawer.

"Tell me again what we're doing here," Herbert said.

"We're casing the joint—planning our strategy so when we come here tonight, we won't get any surprises. Check?"

"Check," Herbert agreed sadly.

The guy was such a dweeb.

"What if we get caught?" Herbert asked.

"We won't get caught. Trust me."

They approached the main building. The computer center was just down the hall from the offices. Steve glanced around and saw no one but some maintenance guy at the other end of the campus. The maintenance guy seemed to be concentrating on something he saw at the bottom of a manhole. Steve tried the key in the lock and found to his delight and relief that it fit. He tried turning it.

"It works," he announced. "Don't you feel better now?"

"Oh yes," Herbert said sarcastically. "Absolutely."

"Come on," Steve said. "We have to make our plan for the evening."
